Negative Frame kit:: How-To

Digital, Tutorials

The Negative Frame kit is so fun & has so many possibilities!

1. Open up your Negative Frame. You will see the grey & white squares in it…this means it’s transparent, so don’t worry!

2.  Open your photo.  Simply use your Move Tool to drag & drop your Photo UNDERNEATH your frame.

Your Layer Palette will look like this:

3.  You can move your photo around to make sure the Negative Frame is framing the photo the way you want. The photo I used here was too big for the frame, so I needed to cut it out a bit to fit. So, I used my Rectangular Marquee Tool to select the area inside the frame.

You will see Marching Ants around the selected area.

4. Go to: SELECT>INVERSE & Hit Delete/Clear.  This will clear the excess part of your photo so it fits inside the Negative Frame.

5.  Go to: LAYER>FLATTEN IMAGE & then save your image with the Negative Frame!  Voila! You have a framed photo!

so does this same technique work for all of your frames? I just recently bought some and can’t seem to get this same thing to work….

  2. Rhonna Farrer Says:

Yes, Lynn, it is the same technique for all frames that are PNG files.
If it’s an oval or a circle, you just do the same thing with the Elliptical Marquee tool.

Can you be more specific on what you can’t get to work? I’m here to help!

    RHonna,
Is it ok to make the frame smaller for a smaller picture? Does this distort the frame in anyway? I know larger is not good, but how about smaller?
    Thanks,
    Jill

  4. Rhonna Farrer Says:

    Yes, Jill!
In Photoshop click on the frame,
go to: EDIT>TRANSFORM>SCALE & then grab a corner & size it down to the picture you need.
    IF it’s blurry, go to:
FILTER>SHARPEN & it should be OK!

I am so frustrated!! I cannot get this to work even with my handy dandy Photoshop Elements 7 for Dummies book! I don’t understand what it means to drag the photo UNDERNEATH the frame. Would anyone be willing to help me out? I hope so! Thanks!

  6. Juli P Says:

    Karen,
In your little layers box, the frame will be layer 0 and your photo will be layer 1. Click on layer 1 in your layer box and DRAG it to the position BELOW the frame layer (layer 0) and it works fine.
Just did it with six pictures on the double negative frame and it worked like a charm!
    Hope it helps.

  7. new to PSE7 Says:

Hey! After extracting the negative frames, I try to open the folder and get the response “can not open because it is the wrong type of file” - I see now that it is a PNG and not a ABR- but after extracting- how do I get it to open? Have tried to open both in PSE 7 and in my documents folder… Would appreciate any help.
    Thanks much!
